Firmware for X-Pro1 | Fujifilm Global

The new firmware version 2.0 for the Fuji X-Pro1 is released. It makes the auto focus and the manual focus of the Fuji X-Pro1 faster and more reliable. In my reviews of the manual focus for the X-Pro1, I stated that the manual focus lag with the focus by wire focusing ring was unusable. After updating the firmware I’ve got to say that is is much improved and has gone leaps and bounds toward true geared manual focus but still falls short. There is a different feeling when using a manual geared focusing mechanism. Maybe its the feel of the […]

Leica on a Budget: Conclusion

I’d like to thank all the readers of this series: “Leica on a Budget”. I’ve received a lot of feedback, and it seems, many of you out there are interested in a camera that will allow you to use Legacy M mount lenses, as well as a camera with a portable form factor, with the Image Quality that will be comparable with the  Leica M8, M9, or full frame DSLR. But cost a whole lot less! With the economy the way it is, and photography being such an equipment centric hobby/profession, you may find it challenging to stretch your funds […]

Frame Lines in the Optical View Finder: Fuji X-Pro1

If you read my review of a Third Party M lens mount to Fuji X Pro mount you’ll know that one of the issues that I had with the overall usage of the lens adapter on the body, was that you didn’t get any frame lines for custom lenses in the optical view finder. With the release of the body firmware 1.10, Fujifilm has added custom frame lines to the optical viewfinder. Yea!!! With the firmware upgrade, if you set the camera to 50mm or 18mm or 75mm you will get an approximate frame line, that is fairly accurate. With lenses that are 15mm and […]

What is Hyperfocal Focusing?

With my latest reviews of the Voitlander 15mm F4.5 and the Zeiss 18mm F4.0, I’ve been talking a lot about hyperfocal focusing and zone focusing, and I guess there may be some confusion about what I mean by these terms, and how to use these techniques. I will clear up the confusion and explain what I mean by these terms. For the beginners out there, or for those of you that intrinsically understand what depth of field is, but don’t really know how to explain it, Depth of Field is the area of acceptable focus in an image. As photographers […]

Leica on a Budget: Part 1

I had a reader ask me what camera would be the best camera for his older M mount lenses that didn’t cost over $5000.00 USD. He had an assortment of Leica M mount lenses as well as a few Voigtlanders. So basically he wants a Leica M9 on a budget. I’ve been wondering what the answer to this question is for a long time also, so I decided to do some tests. This will be a multi part review that will test the two latest contenders the Sony NEX-7 and the Fuji X-Pro1 with various M mount lenses and compare […]
