Fun with the Zeiss 18mm F4 on a Sony NEX-7

In my review of the Sony 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 vs. Zeiss 18mm F4, I mentioned that this camera and lens combination made me want to keep shooting and make interesting images with it. So I decided I show you how much fun I’ve been having. I don’t want to give the lens back at this point and although the cost is high, It’s a really fun lens to play around with. All the images were shot hand-held at night. Most used aperture was F4.0.

Focusing

I love how with this lens you don’t really have to focus with subjects that are more than 15 feet away. It’s almost like a point and shoot. You compose your image and use some good breathing and bracing techniques and fire away. Did I mention that these are all hand-held? Also I love that this lens has a focusing scale on the lens. All you do is guess how far a subject is away from you, set it on your lens, and shoot. You don’t have to bring the camera up to your face or zoom in at all. Very helpful when you are trying to be “discrete on the street”.

Staying Discrete

Another benefit of using the Sony NEX-7 with Zeiss 18mm F4.0 is that you can go very much unnoticed in large crowds. The Sony NEX-7 has a flip-up screen that allows you to hold the camera at your waist and still see the LCD. Nice feature Sony! So when making your image you look down into the LCD. Plus if you hold your hand over the lens in a way that doesn’t Yell, “HEY I’M TAKING A PICTURE” no one will ever know. Very helpful when trying to capture a specific moment! Also you can brace yourself easier at the hip and do tracking shots like the one of the ambulance.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I will leave you with “Lonely Cookie Monster” and remind you of this, “Get off  your butt and go take some pictures!!!” Have FUN!!! and bring your kid, your girl friend, your man friend, Husband, etc.
